Hair Care Advice

General Care

  • Be kind to wet hair - shampoo and towel dry gently. If hair tangles easily apply a clean-rinsing conditioner in the shower and then immediately comb with a wide-toothed comb before rinsing out.
  • Comb wet hair gently and slowly with a wide-toothed comb.
  • Take time to de-tangle knots. Don't yank them.
  • Never brush wet hair. You will stretch it too much and cause breakage.
  • Even when growing your hair - get the ends trimmed every 8 weeks as split ends shaft.
  • Don't use elastic bands to tie back your hair.

Holiday Tips

On holiday always rinse saltwater or chlorine out of your hair. Use a good 'clarifying' shampoo that will remove all the chlorine from your hair. Chlorine is damaging to the hair and will also join with copper sulphate in the hair and turn it "swimmers' green."

When lying out in the sun apply a good conditioner which contains sunscreens. The heat from the sun will help the action of the conditioner and the sunscreens will block out the UV rays which cause hair damage.

Flaky or Sensitive Scalp

If you have a dry or flaky scalp it could be for a variety of reasons. Changes in weather climates can affect scalp moisture. Winter produces a dry climate in houses and the cold air outside makes skin chapped. Medications can also cause dry scalps. It is very important to correct dry/flaky scalps as sebum build up can clog hair follicles which could lead to early hair loss.

Dry Hair

Dry hair lacks sufficient natural oils. To care for dry hair, you'll want to preserve the natural oil it has and add moisture with specially formulated dry hair remedies. Don't forget - condition dry hair often, especially when straightening or blow drying.

Oily Hair

Keep oily hair clean, clean, clean! That means shampooing every day at least once. Key things to remember:

  • If you exercise vigorously and sweat a lot, you may need to shampoo twice a day.
  • Use a good cleansing shampoo on oily hair.
  • Use conditioners sparingly.
  • A mild finishing rinse made for oily hair will help with combing.

Care for Fine Hair

People with fine hair have about 90,000 strands on their heads. A major complaint with thin hair is limpness.

Phase 2 recommends: System Professional 1.3 Volume ShampooOpen link in new window which makes fine hair feel stronger and provides long-lasting volume. To help avoid thin looking hair, especially on damp days, try a styling product that builds volume without weighing it down. Phase 2 recommends: System Professional VolumagicOpen link in new window.

Did You Know…?

Hair is actually dead material when it leaves its root - otherwise it would hurt very much when your hairdresser works with his scissors. Most people know that, but do you know about these facts:

  • A blonde head of hair has usually much more strands than red or dark hair heads.
  • Hair consists mainly of keratin, which is also responsible for the elasticity of fingernails.
  • A single hair has a thickness of 0.02 - 0.04mm, so that 20 - 50 hair strands next to each other make one millimetre.
  • Hair is strong as a wire of iron. It rips after applying a force equivalent to 60kg, only after it stretched itself for about 70%.
  • Even on a good hair day, everyone loses at least 40 to 100 strands.
  • The average scalp has 100,000 strands, or just fewer than 1,000 per square inch.
  • We are born with all our hair follicles. Some are programmed to grow pigmented hair (as on our scalp) up to 3 feet in length.
  • The trait for baldness can be passed down through paternal or maternal genes.
  • Hormone imbalance and crash dieting can trigger temporary hair loss.
